VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN service provides remote access and private data communications over public networks.
CTS has implemented a PPTP VPN solution on campus. This standard is supported natively on Windows 2000 and higher as well as OSX.2 and higher.
A VPN offers two main advantages for students:
By default, wireless data traffic is transmitted in the clear. When using your wireless laptop, you can connect to the VPN to encrypt your airborne data traffic for a more secure connection.
Off-campus users can connect to use college services as if they were connected locally. For example, students in the dorms or off-campus could then use windows or macintosh file-sharing (rather than FTP) to reach their helios directories.
